Job Description

Assistant Director of Employee Relations

  • Salary: £40,687 - £43,662

  • Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
We are seeking an Assistant Director of Employee Relations to provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of employee relation matters and people management. This role is integral to ensuring our College’s people policies and procedures are current,compliant with employment law, and reflective of best practice initiatives. Day-to-day of the role:
  • Develop and implement employee relations strategies, policies, and programs in alignment with the College’s goals and values.
  • Serve as the primary contact for employee grievances, complaints, and concerns, ensuring prompt and fair resolution.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into employee complaints, maintaining fairness, impartiality, and legal compliance.
  • Line manage the Employee Relations Advisors and People Service Administrators, ensuring efficient case management and team coordination.
  • Schedule and attend regular meetings with Heads of Faculties and Divisions to discuss employee relations matters and provide updates.
  • Advise managers on performance management, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution.
  • Lead on complex employee relations matters, including reorganisation, redundancy, and TUPE.
  • Ensure accurate and timely maintenance of case management records and logs.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel to ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate potential employee relation issues.
  • Facilitate employee relations training programs to promote understanding and awareness of College policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with unions and negotiate Collective Bargaining Agreements if applicable.
  • Monitor and analyse key employee relations metrics and recommend improvement initiatives.
  • Review and monitor Occupational Health provision for the College.
  • Support various HR Projects, audits, and compliance efforts.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • CIPD level 7 or equivalent in HR.
  • Level 2 in literacy and numeracy.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Senior HR Generalist, with a track record of developing and delivering complex employee relation casework and people projects.
  • Effective people management skills, with experience in racial diversity, inclusion, and equality in the workplace.
  • Excellent technical HR knowledge and demonstrable knowledge of current HR legislation and practice.
  • Experience in meeting objectives and targets in an HR role.
  • Sound working knowledge of Safeguarding and Keeping Children Safe in Education.
  • Understanding of employee Terms and Conditions, payroll, and pensions.
  • High levels of attention to detail and excellent IT skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present, negotiate, and influence effectively.
  • Experience in an FE or HE environment is desirable.
