In the coming years, our network will be pivotal in connecting and transporting the power needed to decarbonise the UK’s electricity network and in doing so power the UK’s netzero ambition. Our business is rapidly growing, to deliver the largest investment package that Scotland’s electricity system has ever seen, with a projected investment programme of over £20bn in the next 10 years.The Senior Manager, Area System Planning leads a team of specialist power system engineers and data analytics modellers responsible for ensuring that regional transmission network technical specifications are robustly defined in accordance with the nationalelectricity planning standards to inform the development of regional networks with capability for the security and continuity of supply to consumers over a range of energy futures and viable operating conditions. The team undertake continual assessment ofthe capability of the current and planned regional transmission system against net zero pathways to update and recommend the regional network development plans and necessary transmission capital investment.This role will report to our Head of Strategic System Planning sitting in the Business Planning and Commercial directorate.The responsibilities of the Senior Manager, Area System Planning include:- Support and develop a team of specialist power system engineers and data analytics modellers to undertake continual assessment of the current and planned regional transmission system capabilities.- Assess changing short- and long-term network conditions through building and maintaining an electrical model of the regional transmission systems and undertaking system studies, ensuring capability to accommodate users’ requirements.- Work effectively with cross functional specialists across SSEN Transmission (engineering, environment, consent, communities) to harness their expertise in developing and assessing a credible range of strategic regional network reinforcement options fornetwork development.- Rigorously apply our investment planning methodology and decision-making framework to strategic options assessment and business case analysis to inform strategic regional network development plans and recommendations for necessary transmission investment.- Work closely with other network owners, the Electricity System Operator, and wider stakeholders to embed whole system thinking in our strategic regional network plans and represent SSEN Transmission in industry governance processes for capital investmentprogrammes.What do I needTo be considered for this role, we would love you to have:- In-depth knowledge of the GB energy industry structure including markets, economics of transmission investment and networks regulatory framework, including our Licence Obligations and Industry Codes/Standards for the design of, and connections to the transmissionnetwork.- Ability to technically assess issues, using understanding of new technology and how it performs in the power system to enable critical assessment and prioritisation of a range of technical solutions.- Understanding of requirements for technical studies associated with transmission and interconnected networks – including power flow analysis, fault level studies, voltage and thermal capability, transient stability, fast switching studies, harmonic andpower quality analysis.- Experience of acting as a subject matter expert within system planning, with the ability to see the bigger picture and to present succinctly and with authority to senior business stakeholders and Ofgem for investment decisions.- Proven capabilities in team development, naturally coaching and mentoring to deliver outstanding performance and a positive, inclusive culture.About our BusinessAtSSEN Transmission, we take immense pride in owning and operating the high-voltage electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland.
